Saha team went to the Warwick sales with the intension of only saving two horses and had already chosen those two and planning on leaving the sales when the team stumbled upon an emaciated Palouse Pony with a teeny tiny foal at foot.
Everyone at the sales saw how very sick the mare was with her head hung low. She was kicking her foal away from feeding as she was distressed in the pens with so many people around and the frightening atmosphere.
we knew the mare would immediately have to go into critical care and go on a drip to be saved. We outbid anyone else bidding on the mare and foal because we knew that she would urgently seek vet help vet help for them both and there is no guarantee that any other buyer would give them that level of care.
They were loaded immediately and brought to the Gold Coast Sanctuary for critical vet care. Matt from Gold Coast Equine found the mare to be very unwell and dehydrated she had virtually no milk for her foal. She was put on a drip to rehydrate her and help stimulate her milk supply and in the mean time, Kalahari was supplemented with frozen milk from a nanny mare Piper- left from feeding our baby Sahara, who passed away earlier in the week.
Even tho Kalahari’s mum Oasis was getting stronger and brighter producing milk she was sadly struck down with severe and very sudden attack of colic. Nothing could be done to save her and she was euthanised. Kalahari grieved next to the body of his mother until our fabulous nanny mare Piper was brought down from the Lockyer Valley . Fortunately Piper still had plenty of milk and took Kalahari straight away.
kalahari has turned into a lovely natured boy who loves scratches and human attention, he is a easy going character.
